fiction:
[10] In Susan Glaspell s play Trifles, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hales
begin to suspect that Minnie killed her husband after they discover
the strangled body of one of these animals in a sewing basket. 
Answer:  canary [prompt on "bird"]
[10] A canary named Serena is decapitated in this play after the title
  bitch claims she would rather see it dead than leave it with someone
  else. Luckily, at the end of this work that title daughter of the
  Count presumably commits suicide after Jean commands her to do so.

[10] The character "Canary Mary" appears in Suzan-Lori Parks' play
  F***ing A, which was inspired by this Hawthorne work and centers on
  the abortionist Hester Smith, who is physically branded with the
  letter "A".
